Leopold Engel wurde 1858 in Sankt Petersburg geboren und war Okkultist und Schauspieler. Sein Vater Karl Dietrich Engel war ein Violinist und ab 1846 Konzertmeister im Orchester des russischen Staatstheaters. Nach seiner Pensionierung übersiedelt die Familie nach Berlin, Bremen, Oldenburg und schließlich nach Dresden. Mit 22 Jahren ging Leopold Engel, nach einer guten Schulausbildung wie er schrieb, zur Bühne in verschiedenen Orten.
1888 trifft er mit dem Okkultisten und Hochgradfreimaurer Theodor Reuss in Berlin zusammen, um den Illuminatenorden von Adam Weishaupt neu zu gründen.
1891 erfolgt die Niederschrift des umstrittenen sogenannten 11. Bandes des Großen Evangeliums Johannes (GEJ) nach "innerem Wortdiktat" auf Bitten und Drängen des damaligen Verlegers der Lorberschriften, Christoph Friedrich Landbeck und dessen Freunden. In den Kreisen der engen Lorber-Anhänger ist dieser Zusatzband sehr umstritten und wird heftig, als vom Satan diktiert, abgelehnt. Kritiker dieses Standpunktes gehen davon aus, dass durch Leopold Engels Beitrag ein forderndes Element zur Bildung auch kritischen Geistes zugelassen ist.
